The Dayton Flyers defeated VCU 79-72 on Wednesday night to clinch the outright A-10 regular season title. The Flyers got huge contributions from guards Charles Cooke and Scoochie Smith, who each had 20 points.
With the win, Dayton improves to 24-5, 14-2 A-10 and will be the first seed at the Atlantic 10 conference tournament in Pittsburgh next week. VCU, meanwhile, dropped to 23-7, 13-4 A-10, and holds a 1-game lead over both Rhode Island and Richmond for the 2 seed.
Mo Alie-Cox had an efficient night for the Rams, scoring a career-high 23 points on 10-15 shooting. VCU also got solid contributions from Justin Tillman and JeQuan Lewis, who had 18 and 15 points, respectively.
Dayton had an efficient night overall offensively, shooting 54.2% from the field and 40% from three. VCU was not so lucky, shooting a paltry 13.3% from beyond the arc and 42.9% from the field.
The Flyers will cap off their regular season when they travel to Foggy Bottom on Saturday night to face George Washington.
VCU’s final regular season game will come at home on Saturday afternoon, as the Rams host George Mason at 2 pm.
