The Latest Commits to VCU Basketball’s 2018 Class

It has been a busy month as VCU receives commitments for its 2018 class. Several offers have been made under Coach Mike Rhoades, but there are still players that have VCU under consideration. As of right now, there are three players that have officially committed to VCU for the next season. Those players consist of PJ Byrd, KeShawn Curry, and Vincent Williams.

Point Guard Peter “PJ” Byrd from George Bush High School announced his commitment to VCU on Sept. 6 via Twitter. “This whole recruiting process was tough and I knew it wasn’t going to be easy,” Byrd said in his statement released on Twitter. “I was counted out, told I wasn’t good enough, but God pushed me through.”

Byrd received numerous offers from universities, those including Tulsa, Murray State, UMass, and Rice. A few days before his commitment to VCU, Byrd took his first and only official visit to Boise State on Sept. 1.

“Never thought this day would come. Mama, We Did it!! I’m very blessed to say that i’m committing to VCU!!”

Byrd will join the team as a point guard following the 2018 graduation of senior point guard Johnny Williams.

Fork Union Military Academy congratulated Guard KeShawn Curry on his commitment to play for VCU on Oct. 2. Curry visited VCU last weekend and didn’t take long to make a final decision afterwards.

Curry told Richmond Times-Dispatch that, “I just liked everything about it. I liked the coaches- Coach Rhoades, Coach Byers. I mean, it’s so family-oriented. When I was there, it just felt very good to me.”

Curry said he wasn’t highly recruited in high school and had some smaller Division l schools and a couple of Division ll schools after him. Later, Curry decided to attend Fork Union for a postgraduate year to improve his play and hopefully upgrade his recruitment.

The guard averaged 19.5 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 4.2 apg as an All-First Coast Second Team selection in 2017. Curry joins Byrd as the second freshman member of VCU’s 2018 class, joining former Rice Owl, Corey Douglas.

Forward Vincent Williams from St. John’s’ Jesuit in Toledo, Ohio, announced his commitment to VCU on Oct. 4 via Twitter. “I would like to thank every University that has recruited me over these three years and also believing in me from the beginning,” Williams said on Twitter. “This opportunity that i’m being blessed with has been my dream, my entire life.”

Williams received 17 offers from universities including JMU, Oakland University, and Saint Louis University. In Aug., Williams selected his top six which consisted of: VCU, University of Toledo, University of Richmond, Wichita State University, Duquesne University, and The University of Akron. Williams posted on Twitter that he received an offer from Xavier University on Sept. 27, but ultimately VCU was the way to go.

“I believe that the staff, Coach Rhoades, and VCU is the best place for me and sets suits my goals for not only the my college career but also in the time to come! Go Rams!”

Rams Review will continue to keep a look out for new commitments as decisions are made.
