After a three-game losing streak, the Rams won 1-0 in overtime against the Richmond Spiders at the final home game of the regular season.
There was plenty of back and forth between the Rams and Spiders in regular play, including some aggression that caused injury to sophomore Kelly Graves and junior Amanda Hallesjo. They were able to walk off the field and look like they will be able to play in the postseason. With five shots on goal by the Rams and four by Richmond the time of possession was just about equal, causing it to be such a close game.
VCU was saved by sophomore Audrey Sanderson in the goal multiple times and especially by a fingertip stop on a corner kick by Richmond. The game-winning shot was scored by sophomore Julia Suarez two minutes into overtime. Suarez’s goal was her sixth on the season and perhaps one of her most spectacular, coming from outside the 18’ and finishing the final home game.
The Rams finish the regular season 8-10-1 overall and 4-6 in conference play. Any post-season play in the Atlantic 10 Conference will be announced later on in the week.
