Black and Gold Game Recap



With the college basketball season approaching, fans were able to get a good first look at the VCU Men’s Basketball team in the Gold & Black game. In a competitive scrimmage, the Gold team defeated the Black team 68-58.

First, head coach Will Wade introduced the team, leading with everyone’s favorite the quote of the night: “Who needs football right?”

The Black team consisted of Marquell Fraser, Johnny Williams, Mo Alie-Cox, Samir Doughty, De’Riante Jenkins, and Justin Tillman. Competing on the Gold team was JeQuan Lewis, Malik Crowflield, Doug Brooks, Jordan Burgess, Ahmed Hamdy, Torey Burston, and Issac Vann. Both teams had a great mix of the team, with a lot of competition on both sides.

The opening tip was a battle of bigs, as seniors Mo Alie-Cox (Black) and Ahmed Hamdy (Gold) fought for the opening possession. Hamdy finished as the Gold team’s leading scorer with 13 points. Senior Doug Brooks and redshirt senior Jordan Burgess also helped carry the team to victory, as they each scored 12 points.

A strong showing from junior Jonathan Williams, who had 15 points, kept the Black team in it. Redshirt freshman Samir Doughty finished with 13 points and knocked down a few 3-pointers. Fan favorite Mo-Alie Cox helped lock down the paint and picked up a few blocks along the way.

Leading the game in points, Lewis helped the Gold team with 16 points and following right behind was Williams. Junior Justin Tillman also finished in double figures for the night.

Both teams showed why VCU has one of the best men’s basketball programs in the country. The fans have a lot to be excited about this upcoming season.

The boys came out ready to play and we cannot wait to see what they have planned for us this season. The season tips-off Friday, November 4th as the team takes on Queens University at the Siegel Center.
