VCU (2) defeated Davidson (6) on Saturday afternoon 76-54 in the Atlantic-10 tournament semifinals.
The Rams, who beat UMass last night to reach the semifinals, were led by senior guard Korey Billbury, who had 17 points and 7 rebounds. Coach Will Wade also got solid contributions from Mo Alie-Cox, who had 13 points, and JeQuan Lewis,who had 11.
“I thought Billbury stepped up. I’m really proud of him,” said coach Will Wade at his postgame press conference.
Melvin Johnson, who played at less than 100% after injuring his ankle last night, finished with 9 points. He sat for the better part of 2nd half in order to rest his ankle.
The Wildcats were led senior guard Brian Sullivan, who had 15 points, and senior guard Jordan Barham, who had 13. Jack Gibbs was held to just 4 points on 2-of-13 shooting.Davidson, who is usually reliant on the 3-ball for their offense, shot 21.7% from beyond the arc (5-of-23) and shot just 37% from the floor. VCU was able to connect on 40% of its 3’s (10-of-25) and shot 48.3% from the floor.
Davidson coach Bob McKillop credited VCU’s 3-point shooting and tenacious defense for its victory today.
“They prevented us from running our stuff… They deserved this victory,” he said. With the win, the Rams will get a chance to defend their A-10 title when they face the St. Joseph Hawks tomorrow at 12:30.
