Rams Review Recap: VCU vs. UMass



The VCU Rams defeated the Minutemen from Massachusetts 85-70 in the quarterfinals of the Atlantic 10 tournament on Friday night. The Rams, who had four players in double figures, were led by Melvin Johnson, who had 19 points. JeQuan Lewis had 16, Korey Billbury had 12, and Justin Tillman had 10 points to go along with 9 rebounds to pace VCU.

VCU shot just 1-16 from beyond the arc, but out-rebounded the Minutemen 49-31 and had 50 of their 85 points in the paint. The Rams amassed 20 offensive rebounds, which led to 16 second chance points. VCU also got 20 points off 12 UMass turnovers.

Senior guard Trey Davis led UMass with 20 points, and Jabarie Hinds and Rashaan Holloway had 16 points apiece for the Minutemen. They shot 43.9% from the field, but simply could not keep the Rams off the glass.

With the win, VCU advances to the semifinals, where they will face the winner of St. Bonaventure – Davidson. The game will tip off at 4 PM.
