The VCU Rams defeated the Davidson Wildcats on senior night at The Stu. The Rams won 70-60 behind the leadership of Melvin Johnson, who was playing his final home game at the Siegel Center, and junior Mo Alie-Cox.
VCU (22-8, 14-3) shot 1-of-14 from beyond the arc (no, that is not a type-o), but used their size to their advantage, as Alie-Cox finished with 18 points and 9 rebounds, and Justin Tillman added 11 points.
Melvin Johnson and Korey Billbury, the lone seniors on the Rams’ roster, finished with 16 and 9 points, respectively.
Both Johnson and Billbury reflected on their time with the Rams after the game. “I love this place, I love the fans here. RVA is a second home,” said Johnson. “I loved playing for these guys, I loved playing for coach Wade. I love the fans and thank them for everything,” Billbury added, speaking about his one year with the team.
Davidson (17-11, 9-8) got solid contributions from junior guard Jack Gibbs, who had 18 points, and sophomore forward Peyton Aldridge, who had 15 points.
Despite shooting 7% from the 3-point line, the Rams shot 51% from the floor and held the Wildcats to 38% shooting. With the win and the loss by St. Joes, the Rams are guaranteed to clinch at least a share of the A-10 regular season title. If VCU wins at Dayton on Saturday, it will clinch the title outright. Coach Wade summed up what’s ahead for the Rams saying “We’ve got to go earn it. Anything worth having aint’ easy. We will lay it on the line, I promise you that.”
VCU travels to Dayton to face the Flyers on Saturday night.
Davidson will host George Washington on Saturday afternoon.
