VCU avenged a loss to George Washington earlier this season by beating them on the road Saturday afternoon. The Rams defeated the Colonials 69-65 and picked up a crucial win for their NCAA tournament resume, as well as clinching a first-round bye in the A-10 tournament.
The Rams (21-8, 13-3) were led by sophomore guard Johnny Williams, who had 17 points. VCU also got solid contributions from Jordan Burgess, who had 14 points, and Mo Alie-Cox, who had 11 points to go along with 7 rebounds.
George Washington (21-8, 10-6) got a balanced effort, including 19 points from junior forward Tyler Cavanaugh and 15 points from senior forward Kyle Larsen. VCU held off a furious comeback from the Colonials, as they went on a 12-4 run to take a 63-62 lead with 1:30 left.
The Rams retook the lead for good when Jordan Burgress hit a critical 3-pointer from the corner. With the win, the Rams remain atop the A-10 standings with two games remaining.
